Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Farmer-herder conflicts have long plagued Yola North LGA, Adamawa State, causing social unrest and economic disruptions. Public relations (PR) has emerged as a vital tool for conflict management, fostering dialogue, and promoting mutual understanding between conflicting parties. PR campaigns often leverage community engagement, media outreach, and peace-building initiatives to address grievances and prevent escalation. This study examines the role of PR in managing farmer-herder conflicts and highlights strategies that have proven effective in fostering lasting peace in Yola North LGA (Ahmed & Bello, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Farmer-herder conflicts in Yola North remain a significant challenge despite various interventions. Ineffective communication, mistrust, and limited community participation have undermined efforts to resolve disputes. This study explores the effectiveness of PR in bridging communication gaps, fostering understanding, and promoting peaceful coexistence.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of PR in managing farmer-herder conflicts in Yola North LGA.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: PR does not significantly impact the resolution of farmer-herder conflicts in Yola North LGA.
  2. H1: Effective PR strategies foster improved communication and understanding in conflict resolution.
  3. H2: Addressing challenges faced by PR practitioners enhances conflict resolution outcomes.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study provide valuable insights for government agencies, PR practitioners, and conflict resolution experts on leveraging PR to manage farmer-herder conflicts. By highlighting successful strategies and addressing challenges, the study contributes to sustainable peace-building efforts.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on PR practices in managing farmer-herder conflicts within Yola North LGA, excluding broader conflict resolution mechanisms or other regions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Farmer-Herder Conflicts: Disputes between agricultural farmers and pastoral herders over resources such as land and water.
  • Public Relations (PR): Strategic communication efforts to foster understanding and resolve disputes.
